Boosterthon Fun Run

Duncan Creek Elementary just did the most amazing fund raiser. I went to the school to see the kick-off rally and I felt like I was sitting at a Jazz half-time show...not exaggerating! The guys who own this company are brilliant and they earn every penny they make. They come to your school for NINE days and are socializing with the kids every day while handing out prizes for every pledge the kids get. They keep the kids so pumped up and motivated to get more pledges...my kids thought they were super stars. Then, on the ninth day, they do the Fun Run. Basically, everyone who pledges pays the child $1 or more per lap and the most laps they can run is 35. Our school raised $30,000 and that is after all the expenses were paid. CRAZY!
The kids were treated like stars and they really had so much fun with this fund raiser. Each student got a shirt to wear on the fun run day. You can see Max running through this tunnel and they also had music playing the whole time. I could hear the music from my house, they were living it up!
Fun Run staff explaining to the ropes to the kindergartners and first graders. See the teacher in the plaid shorts getting down? That's Mrs. Fugaro, Max's teacher...she's a hoot.
Max was ALL business! I kept trying to get his attention but he was in a zone the whole time. They ran for thirty minutes and it was over 90 degrees that day. Max exceeded the cap amount for laps running 44 laps...over two miles. He ran the most in his class. He'll be our track and field star!
Drew was also all business, however, he looked for me every lap to make sure I was still watching. He also exceeded the cap by running 39 laps. They were so hot but ran their little hearts out.
Mitchell begging to get out of his stroller and run a few laps too :)
Cool down.
This is Cambrie and her friend Elizabeth. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Brie run because I thought they were all running at the same time and I was wrong. I'm learning a lot being part of a new school and I feel like half the time I have no idea what's going on. I felt so bad! She had a good time though and ended up running 36 laps. What a neat fund raiser. It was a week and a half of partying and they earned an amazing amount of money for their school.
The reward for running over two miles in the middle of the afternoon in 90 degree weather. So NOT worth it :)

A Must Read

Okay, Okay. I know there are many of you who recommended I read this long ago and you're wondering why I'm just now getting to it. No excuses, except for the fact that I've been immersed in some great novels like Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah, Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult, The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan, and Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay, to name a few (most of them must reads also).

However, Confessions of a Slacker Mom is in a league of it's own. I am LAUGHING OUT LOUD 80% of the time while reading this book...she is so right on. Thank you, Muffy Mead-Ferro, for saying out loud what the rest of us only wish we could come to terms with. Thank you for helping me simplify my life, and for validating so many of my own thoughts on parenting. Thank you for pointing out the fact that the world places WAY too many expectations on mothers and that a pile of mud is much more effective than the latest lame, plastic, educational toy I often feel I must buy for my children.

To all you moms out there...really, read this book. There are a few things I do disagree with, but for the most part, it's BRILLIANT.

Love it.

Catch Up

Max got in trouble the other day because he kept taking the Lord's name in vain. I heard him do it and called him into the kitchen and asked him...

Me: "Did you just take the Lord's name in vain?"
Max: "No! I didn't mom! I said Oh my Go_!"

He clearly had no idea what it meant to take the Lord's name in vain. However, he wasn't off the hook because he KNOWS it is wrong...we've had this conversation a few times before. So he was sent to his room. George went and talked to him about that word and when it's appropriate to use it and we assumed we got through to him. Until the next day when he said it again. So, he was again sent to his room and I had him write this...

"I will not use bad words." Not sure how effective it was because he had a lot of fun doing it. Drew would have been traumatized but not Max, he thought it was great! However, we haven't had a problem with him using that word anymore so something worked.

Look what the bottom half of the sentences say...

"I will hot use bod wors." Oh, well. He got the message :)

Cambrie loves to cook and made this bunt cake the other day. Watch out Charm City Cakes!

She put chocolate shavings on top...it was very DELICIOUS!

After eating cake...so pleased.

The kids have made it through 3.5 weeks of school now and here's the report so far...

When asked by his Nana how the first week of school went, Max answered, "It was pretty rough!"

And that seems to be how it's still going for him. He keeps telling me he doesn't want to leave me and that he wants to stay home and do school with me. When I asked him why he doesn't like school he said...

"All we do is LISTEN, LEARN, AND DO, LISTEN, LEARN, AND DO!"

So great that he has to actually DO what someone asks him to do seeing as how he has a hard time with that at home. He's just always in his own little world so he has to be told 57 times to do something. Apparently Mrs. Fugaro isn't willing to ask that many times :)

However, he leaves with a smile and comes home with one too so I know he's doing well.

Drew is doing great. He thinks school is too long but also leaves willingly and comes home with a lot of exciting things to tell me about the day. He gets a dot on his calendar at the end of the day which is a "behavior" mark and I have to initial by it each day. Green is the best and so far he's gotten all green. Yeah! He loves his teacher and comes home everyday reporting to me what the kids were wearing that day in class. Cool shoes, cool basketball shorts, pretty skirts, shorts that are too short, etc...

He came home the other day and said "Mom, can I get one of those tight white shirts that go under jerseys with the H on it (meaning the Under Armor shirts)? That's what my friends wear and they are SO cool." He's so observant...a little too observant!

I had to get a close-up of this picture. Drew made this picture in school of our moving van. Sadly, it seems we've scarred our kids for life. You can even see our red kitchen chairs in the back of the van...LOL!

And poor Cambrie! She doesn't have any fun pictures to show off. This is what she looks like after school when she has homework (which hasn't been too often yet).

Growing up has it's ups and downs. However, she is involved in Lit Blitz (which is a competitive book club), she made Choir, she is in TaVaci (a performing dance/theatre company), and she gave a speech today for student council. Needless to say, she is adjusting well and is making some friends here.

This is George's den. Finally done!

This is also our guest room.

So, those of you who are visiting soon may be asking yourself, "Where do I sleep?"

Yeah. Well, until we get a sofa bed, you'll be sleeping on a blow up mattress. But you DO have your own bathroom if that helps :)
